Alchema

Alchema' s core operation is based on the supply and recycling of chemical etchant solutions used in the Electronics Industry (PCB manufacture).

The etchant solutions are used to strip away surplus copper from the printed circuit boards resulting in a spent etchant saturated with copper salts. This is returned to Alchema and processed chemically to regenerate the fresh echant and provide copper products which are used mainly in the wood preservative industry . This process is consistent with Alchema's Environmental strategy of complete recycling.

The company's expertise extends to both chemical plant and process design as well as manufacture gained through its work with etchants and copper salts. This has been extended to investigate other materials linked with the Electronics Industry, most noteably Nickel and Tin.

Alchema has extended its environmental commitment more recently to the recovery of Mercury from a variety of waste streams. A separate Company has been established, Quicksilver Recovery Services Limited, also based at Berwick, for this purpose.

Alchema holds both ISO 14001 and 9001:2000 accreditations as well as appropriate Environmental Authorisations for all its processes.

Quicksilver Recovery

Quicksilver Recovery Services have been operating a mercury recovery/decontamination service since 1998 on the Alchema site at Berwick upon Tweed.

• The process is capable of processing a wide variety of material ranging from waste from the Chlor Alkali Industry to mercury contaminated carbon , fluorescent lamp powder ,contaminated soil, dental amalgam, mercury cell batteries and other inorganic mercury compounds.

• Our plant processes material in batches of approximately 2te with a total annual capacity of approximately 1000 te depending on the nature of the material.

• The Quicksilver recovery process is seen as Best Available Technology for the processing of mercury contaminated material and is fully licenced with IPPC authorisation.

• Quicksilver Recovery Services are accredited to ISO 14001 and 9000 :2000 standards and are members of both Sustainalite and Eurochlor.

• Quicksilver can offer a full consultancy service for the assessment and management of mercury contaminent/spillage, from on-site inspection/assessment through to removal and treatment.

• Quicksilver are in the process of procuring additional abatement systems to extend their service to the treatment of a wide range of organic based waste streams.
